Welcome to Montreal Vestnik! |
History of Věstník Father Bohuslav Janicek, Jesuit priest of St. Wenceslas Mission in Montreal, published the first "Vestnik (Newsletter) of the Czechoslovak organizations in Montreal" in September 1964. Eight organizations were informing the community about their activities: Canadian Czechoslovak Club, Club of Sts. Cyril and Method, Czechoslovak Welfare Association, Czechoslovak National Association in Canada, Royal Canadian Legion Masaryk, St. Wenceslas Mision, Society for Science and Arts, and Gymnastic Association Sokol Masaryk. This number has changed during the years; nowadays six organizations publish in Vestnik: Czech and Slovak Association of Canada with its Seniors Club, Sokol Masaryk, St. Wenceslas Mission, Association Hostyn, Beseda and Comenius Institute. In 2001, when Father Janicek grew old and ill, Alena Martinu started as the chief editor of Vestnik and an editorial board of 5 members has been formed. Vestnik has been broadened, and more and more people are informing the community about various events. Therefore, in 2005 Vestnik was renamed to "Montreal Vestnik". Since the beginning, Vestnik has been made possible by the voluntary work of several members of the Czech and Slovak community in Montreal, and it is now being sent free of charge to approximately 550 addresses. It is financed by voluntary contributions from its readers, by contributions from the Czech organizations, and several entrepreneurs of the Czech and Slovak origin in Montreal.
